the conditions of love
40 x 40 x 3.5. sand + shells + plaster + concrete + oil + rust + lapis lazuli rock pigment (Australia) + yarn + blue kyanite powder + crystal quartz
linen canvas housed in a handcrafted natural beechwood frame. truly one of our favorite frames connor has ever built. these pieces of beechwood are imperfect in the most unique way; nature's lovely imprints are all over them. the sap was still on some of the pieces adding the most interesting textures. light blue grains that look like a stain but the wood is completely untouched. with live spots on each side. some of the corners have been cut with burl details on the edges. photos cannot do this frame justice, you just have to see for yourself. the technique I used to create the texture in this piece was worth every moment of layering and sanding down plaster. there are 4 different layers of plaster/concrete on top of one another. mixed with oil paint adding different shades of gray/tan/beige to highlight the natural formation of fossilization the plaster was creating. sand from all over the north coast, NJ NY NYC CT sprinkled into each layer. the sides of the canvas are textured and we floated the frame just enough to be able to see its full detail.
